if ever there were a moment
that wasn't left up to chance,
it would have been
just
then.

a purchased softness
kindly warmed my torso
and many peoples' hands
and faces.

i felt like a pet--a cat!
i felt what a man
will never feel.
Maybe a grandmother,
a tidy caretaker, maybe
that spot was someone
else's, maybe it was a
gift.

light stroked each
corner at that chanceless
second, and i similarly stroked
the faces placing themselves
into my stomach, my ribs and
my chest.

these were my
children, my masters.
